Psalm 61 (Sermon Notes)

I had the privilege of speaking again at Mill Road Baptist Church. These are my notes.

1. Being Overwhelmed
– The overwhelming events of my last couple of months:
becoming a father, and my wife’s physical pain.
– Realization: To be overwhelmed is the normal Christian life!
– Eg. Paul (2 Corinthians 1:8), Jesus (Mark 14:34), Ezekiel (Ezekiel 3:15)
– David; Context of Psalm 61…

2. The Rock That Is Higher
– God’s love is an overwhelming reality greater than any other overwhelming (Eph. 3:14-21; Rom. 5; Rom. 8:38-39)
– God will let us be overwhelmed by daily pressures, so that we will seek Him.
– To be ‘wounded’ by personal encounter with God is the greatest blessing: Jacob (Genesis 32:24).

3. Four ‘I Will’ Strategies
i. ‘I will cry’
– A baby instinctively knows how to communicate with his parents–just ‘cry’!
– Our prayers don’t need to be complex–on the contrary (Matt. 6:5)!
– We don’t know how to pray… (Rom. 8:26) — so just do it!

ii. ‘I will abide’
– ‘Abide’ is a great biblical word (see esp. John 15) = REMAIN
– ABIDE in the grace (Eph. 2:8) of what Jesus has done (It is finished! John 19:30)

iii. ‘I will trust’
– Saving faith (Rom. 10:9, John 3:16) is a personal trust

iv. ‘I will sing’
– Overwhelmed ‘cry’ of prayer blossoms into overflowing joyful song! (Eph. 5:19)
– ‘I will sing that I may fulfil my vows’ :
Gospel revelation of joy-filled eternity empowers daily obedience
(not obedience earns joy-filled eternity!)

– Story: Simple communion in hospital with Taryn
– Come in simple response to the extravagant invitation of God to feast at His table!
